Why Germany Should Be on Your Family Travel List: Our 9-Day Bavarian Adventure
When people think about European family vacations, destinations like London, Paris, or Italy usually top the list.
Germany wasn't originally the first place I thought to visit.
This trip began for a much more personal reason. As my husband Scott prepared to retire after 20 years of military service, we wanted to celebrate with a meaningful family adventure. When I asked him where he'd always wanted to return, his answer came without hesitation: Germany.
He had spent two weeks there years ago during some training but never truly had the chance to explore everything he’d like to. Combined with the fact that his mom was born in Germany and much of his extended family still lives there, it felt like the perfect destination, not only to celebrate a new chapter, but to reconnect with family history.
Almost two years of planning later, our family of four (along with grandparents and cousins) boarded a flight from Minneapolis for nine unforgettable days exploring Bavaria. Looking back, I can confidently say Germany exceeded every expectation we had.
Bamberg Rose Garden
Our Bavaria Itinerary
Rather than trying to see all of Germany, we focused on one region and gave ourselves enough time to truly experience it.
Bamberg (3 Nights)
Our first stop was the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bamberg.
This charming medieval town immediately slowed us down, in the best possible way. Cobblestone streets, flower-filled squares, historic architecture, and incredible local restaurants made it feel like we'd stepped into another era.
Because Scott's family has roots here, we were fortunate enough to spend time with relatives who showed us around the city. We wandered through the Rose Garden overlooking the rooftops of Bamberg, explored the cathedral and museums, sampled traditional Bavarian food (including plenty of Leberkäse), and watched our kids enjoy neighborhood parks just steps from our historic hotel.
If you're looking for an authentic German experience without overwhelming crowds, Bamberg deserves a place on your itinerary.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen (3 Nights)
If Bamberg gave us history, Garmisch-Partenkirchen delivered the scenery.
Nestled in the Bavarian Alps, this quickly became one of our favorite stops. We stayed at the Dorint Sporthotel, which offered spacious apartment-style accommodations, beautiful mountain views, and an authentic biergarten complete with a playground—a perfect combination for families.
Of course, family travel isn't always picture-perfect.
Both of our boys decided to catch a 24-hour bug during our stay, so Scott and I became experts at "divide and conquer." One parent explored while the other stayed back, then we'd switch the next day.
Despite the unexpected detour, we packed so much into our visit.
Highlights included:
A private walking tour of historic Partenkirchen
A hands-on chocolate-making class with a local chocolatier
Visiting the fairytale-inspired Neuschwanstein Castle
Seeing the crystal-clear waters of Lake Eibsee
Exploring Linderhof Palace and its breathtaking gardens
Mountain viewpoints overlooking the Alps
Traditional Bavarian biergartens
One memorable date night for Scott and me at an amazing restaurant
We had hoped to ride the cable car to the summit of Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain, but Mother Nature had other plans. Heavy clouds meant visibility would have been almost nonexistent. It was disappointing, but also the perfect excuse to come back someday.
Munich (2 Nights)
We wrapped up our adventure in Munich.
After several days of castles and mountain villages, Munich offered a wonderful mix of history, culture, museums, and vibrant city life.
We watched the famous Glockenspiel in Marienplatz, enjoyed dinner at the legendary Hofbräuhaus, wandered through the English Garden, and spent an entire day inside the Deutsches Museum.
And somehow...
We still didn't see everything.
The Deutsches Museum is, without question, the best museum I've ever visited. It was incredibly interactive, engaging for every age, and easily could have filled another full day.
Our final evening ended at the Chinese Tower Biergarten in the English Garden, a perfect way to celebrate an incredible trip before packing our suitcases one last time.
What Surprised Me Most About Germany
Before visiting, I expected beautiful scenery.
I expected castles.
I expected excellent beer.
What surprised me was how easy Germany felt.
Public transportation was efficient. Towns were incredibly clean. Families were everywhere. Parks were thoughtfully designed. Even in larger cities, life seemed to move at a calmer pace.
People were kind.
The food was fantastic.
And there always seemed to be another beautiful mountain, castle, or café waiting just around the corner.
Planning Europe Is Different
As someone who plans vacations professionally, I couldn't help but appreciate just how much planning goes into an independent European itinerary.
Flights, trains, rental cars, castles, museums, timed-entry tickets, guided tours, mountain weather, restaurant reservations, the possibilities are nearly endless.
In fact, this trip reinforced something I'd already suspected:
Europe is incredible... but it's also a destination where many travelers benefit from guided tours, river cruises, or thoughtfully designed itineraries rather than trying to piece everything together on their own.
Our itinerary balanced historic cities, mountain adventures, downtime, and family-friendly experiences in a way that made the trip feel full without feeling rushed. It took nearly two years of planning to get there, and every detail, from our hotels to transportation and activities, helped make the experience seamless.
Final Thoughts
Travel has always been about more than checking destinations off a list.
This trip reminded me that the best vacations are the ones where history becomes personal, where your children experience places they once only read about, and where the unexpected moments, the detours, the weather, even the stomach bugs, become part of the story you'll tell for years afterward.
Germany gave us all of that.
We'll absolutely be back.
And next time... we're making it to the top of Zugspitze.
Thinking About Visiting Germany?
Whether you're interested in exploring Bavaria, taking a Rhine River cruise, or experiencing Europe through a guided itinerary, I'd love to help you find the right fit for your travel style.
Because the best trips aren't about seeing everything, they're about experiencing the places that matter most.
